How does an essential oil diffuser work(2)

Essential oil diffusers have been used for centuries in aromatherapy. While all diffusers use almost the same mechanics in diffusing the oils, the nitty gritty lies in the type of diffuser you are using.

For this article, I am going to discuss the four main types of diffusers so you can better understand them and how each one works.

Ultrasonic Diffusers

The ultrasonic diffuser uses water and electric frequencies to spread essential oils in the air as droplets. It produces a fine mist that consists of both water and the essential oil.

The diffuser has a disk that vibrates after having the electric current pass through it; this causes its contents to break into small particles.

Ultrasonic diffusers are extremely similar to the aforementioned type, but there does exist some notable differences. These varieties also create fine mists that disperse oils into the air, but they do so with the help of water.

This dilutes the oil into a 1-part oil, 1-part water solution, but it also makes the oil cooler in the process.

The diluted solution means the bursts of essential oils is lower in concentration than nebulizing diffusers, which means the use of this type of diffuser is great during the colder months.

Ultrasonic diffusers act as a humidifier as well as an oil diffuser, and the subtle hints of aroma they give off make for a pleasant atmosphere. As mentioned previously, they are far cheaper than nebulizing diffusers, and offer a similar experience — albeit, less intense.

The downsides to ultrasonic diffusers mainly involve their maintenance. Despite offering a multitude of options to choose from, some things are important to consider, and many things are off limits.

They need to be constantly refilled with water, otherwise they cannot operate, and must be cleaned (not all that frequently, but they certainly do need it). They also cannot use an essential oil mixture that has any traces of citrus, as this will cause erosion to occur.

Although they aren’t as loud as nebulizing diffusers, ultrasonic variants often come with lights that cannot be shut off.

Heat Diffuser

As the name suggests, this diffuser uses heat. It heats the essential oil which evaporates gradually into the air. The downside is the heat may cause a change in the chemical components of the essential oil which may make them less useful.

Evaporative diffusers

In this method, air flow is used to diffuse the essential oils into the air. You can use a fan to blow air through a filter with essential oil. The oil will then get across the room.

This method may however not be as effective as the rest since the lighter components of the oil evaporate faster than, the heavier ones. This causes only parts of the oil to be distributed at a time.

Regardless of the type of diffuser you use, the critical thing is that essential oil is used as the prime ingredient. Researchers have shown that the scent of essential oils enters the brain to stimulate it and create a high sense of wellness and physical as well as psychological health.
